Tuesday Book Talk

Thank you Kathleen, Kidpeopleclassroom, for the book link.  It is so much fun seeing the new book reviews.  The book giveaway this week from Kathleen is No More Noisy Nights by Holly Niner and Guy Wolek.

Little Blue and Little Yellow by Leo Lionni.  This is not a new book but one of my favorites.  Little blue and little yellow are friends.  One day they blended their colors together and their families did not know who they were.  "You are not our little blue.  You are green."  And so...

Even though they are color circles, the children really don't mind.  They are fascinated with the story.
To extend the story, we blend a little blue playdoh and a little yellow playdough (use two parts yellow to one part blue).  They can pull it apart, smoosh it together and roll it, roll it until they are done.  HEY, it does make green!  They record their findings.  Draw and color a blue circle plus a yellow circle equals green.   They read the color words.  They put their green playdoh in a zip bag to take home and retell the story.
Throughout the week, we blend yellow and red to make orange with fingerpaint and paint a pumpkin shape to use on our bulletin board in October.
It's not fancy but it is hands-on and the kids love it!

This is short and sweet.
Hand-in-hand we grow!
Janet

  1. Hey, Janet, those color mixing ideas are good ones. Love the play dough idea. Our first science unit is colors each year, starting with something the kids now and then extending it. We read Little Blue and Little Yellow, too. I hope some of your readers will stop by and try to win No More Noisy Nights. It's a goodie! See you around. Kathleen
